In this hour-long talk, I particularly admire the analogy that Dr. Maté used at the beginning about trauma and recovery because it was easy to understand and relate to. He talked about how inseparable between mind and body as well as the relationships that created the environment we live in.
The second half of the video talked about how addiction (of all kind) is a result of us not knowing how to handle the suffering within. Dr. Maté then carried on talking about how different substance corresponded to the similar hormones that make us happy, understanding the substance people used can reveal a lot on what they are lacking in their lives. He linked back how punishment (most of the time is removing the person from relationships) could not help with the recovery because we all heal from relationship.
To quickly sum up, knowing the cause by asking “What happened?” would greatly help because at the end of the day, as human, we all want to get away from pain and suffering, whether by a constructive manner or seemingly destructive path.
